“jeet???” = “did you eat?”, all scrunched up into one word. if you wanna be more fluent, instead of responding yes or no, you’ve got a few options.
“joo?” = “did you eat?”, or,
“twirly!” = “it’s too early to eat!”
when i hear my mom or literally anyone from out east ask me emphatically “JEET?” my heart explodes 1000000x. and whether i’ve ate or not, the answer is “no” — i know there’s usually the best tuna casserole on the other side of this question, and i’m no fool.
i’m jennifer crawford. hailing from kingston, nova scotia, i also lived in fredericton, antigonish, and halifax before moving to toronto. i’ve been here 11 years! it was meant to be a couple year stint for a PhD (which i quit – no regrets!). a whole new life just… slowly grew out between the cracks of the yyz concrete, snagged on my ankles & heart, and i took root.
i live with my two sweeties in a basement apartment in toronto: logan the human, and taiga the dog. they’re spectacular.
sometimes i can’t tell if i’m coming or going, if the threads that tie me to home are gradually severing & fraying wild like a fiddle bow, or just knitting themselves into strong strong cords that tug at me (at least a bit, and sometimes a lot) every day. “vous snever snows” as my nana used to say.
i love any meal that starts with a can of cream of mushroom soup. this site is FOOD NEUTRAL. i promise i’ll never try to make healthy versions of anything. nothing against that stuff, you just won’t find it here. i love it all: whether root to tip, nose to tail, mouth to tail-fin, farm to table, package to mouth, aisle to cupboard, freezer to stove, cellophane bag to mouth… i am DOWN.
the maritime diaspora are sprinkled so far and wide. sometimes you just want some snacks from home (it’ll always be home), which is why i wanted to make this site — to share those with you. i queued up a handful that i’m going to try & get through, and will then just keep this site here for posterity, updating from time to time as i work out how to make other maritime wonders.
some of the recipes are homey. some are stuff maybe your nan made. and i’ll tell ya right now, some of them are just right some fackin greasy.
so cmon in. ceud mìle fàilte! jeet???
